Nature and Scope of Desktop Publishing Operator:

Desktop publishing isn't limited to professionals. With the advent of desktop publishing software and affordable desktop computers, a wide range of people, including non-designers and others without graphic design experience, suddenly had the tools to become desktop publishers.

DTP (desktop publishing) operators use specialist computer software to make sure that printed materials (such as books, newspapers, magazines and brochures) are well designed, attractive and easy to read.

THE WORK MAY INVOLVE:

v working to a design brief from the client or designer

v using DTP software to produce a layout for each page of the publication

v Scanning and editing photographs and other images.

v producing graphics such as diagrams, charts and tables

v using electronic publishing technologies, such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to convert documents to an internet-ready format

CAREER PROSPECTS

A number of career opportunities have come up in the market for desktop publishers. Not only do private sector enterprises hire desktop publishers, but many government sector organizations, such as Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and several other public sector undertakings which have their own publishing divisions, also recruit proficient desktop publishers. On completion of the desktop publishing course, candidates can be easily absorbed in any publishing house or press.
